First, determine how much you can afford. Most people stick to the ‘two months salary’ rule. This means that the ring should cost the equivalent of two months of whatever your current salary is. Bearing in mind that you you have other items to pay for, saving up this amount of money might take you some time. You could want to consider financing. Simply go to the jeweler of your choice and tell them that you are planning to buy an engagement ring, and that financing will be required. Don’t delay – get the credit check out of the way, find out how much the payments will be, and how much of a down payment is expected.

Next, have your sister, mother or your girlfriend’s best friend take your girlfriend out shopping, and make certain that they have a good look at the engagement rings so as to get an idea of what she might prefer. Make sure that the jeweler’s you purchase the ring from will allow you to return the ring, if that is required, or allow your girlfriend to exchange it for another ring if she is not happy with it!

Well, it’s a fact that an engagement ring can be prohibitively expensive, and it can represent a real problem to a young man looking to get started on life’s journey.
