Reduce Cholesterol With Evening Primrose Oil
Posted May 12th, 2009 by SpikeThe Evening Primrose plant was first used medicinally by Native Americans to treat upset stomach or respiratory illness. After its healing properties were introduced to European settlers, the use of the evening primrose for medicine spread to England and Germany.
Evening Primrose Oil is currently used to help with many medical conditions. Research suggests that this traditional remedy may help alleviate symptoms of PMS (premenstrual syndrome) or menopause, as well as relieve hot flashes and mood swings associated with these conditions, due to the gamma linoleic acid the oil contains.
Evening primrose is a plant native to North America, but it grows in Europe and parts of the Southern hemisphere as well. It has yellow flowers that bloom in the evening. Evening primrose oil contains gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an essential fatty acid. Essential fatty acids are required by the body for growth and development, and must be obtained from the diet.
Evening primrose oil is extracted from the seeds of the evening primrose. The oil is usually put into capsules for use.
Evening Primrose is not really a primrose, but it gets its name from that flower because the plant looked similar to an English Primrose. The oil is rich in Vitamin E just like olives and nuts are. In addition, Primrose oil also has an essential fatty acid called omega-6. People that have difficulty creating in this fatty acid in their own bodies can benefit from its use.
The Europeans were one of the first to make it popular. They brought it back to their native soil and crowned this oil a “King’s cure-all’ because of its many useful properties that can cure a large number of diseases. In England, the oil is approved for use with eczema and high cholesterol. In women, it can especially be helpful for relieving breast pain, menstrual pains and improving the quality and fertility of cervical mucus.
Scientists have not figured out how exactly Evening primrose oil exerts its effects, but theorize that it has anti-inflammatory activity. But the fact on the table is this oil truly works well.
Evening primrose oil is available in softgel or bullk liquid forms at your local or internet health food store. Look for name brands like Solaray, Source Naturals, and Natures Plus to ensure quality and purity of the product you purchase.
